Hinchliffe Stadium, Paterson. 2013

Dublin Core

Title

Hinchliffe Stadium, Paterson. 2013

Description

This photograph was taken at the Passaic County Falls end of Hinchliffe Stadium in 2013, facing Public School #5 (visible in background).

The stadium was given federal landmark recognition several years ago. Last week, the Paterson Board of Education made the long delayed decision to go forward with the local landmark status, finally enabling the process for its renovation to begin. Hinchcliffe has been in serious disrepair since the late 1990s when it was closed down, and its condition has deteriorated even further in recent years.

Hinchliffe, named after a well-loved, long-time mayor, has hosted many events since its opening in the 1930s. Among other events, Hinchcliffe was probably best known for hosting the annual Thanksgiving football game between Paterson's two comprehensive high schools, Eastside and Central (now JFK). Others may recall concerts at the "City Stadium," or when the Junior State Colts or New Jersey Eagles called the stadium home. I remember cheering there in the early 90s.
