The Cooper Gristmill

Dublin Core

Title

The Cooper Gristmill

Description

Though the present building was constructed in 1826 by Nathan Cooper, milling flour on this site had been going on since 1760 when Isaiah Younglove set up his milling operation there. The Black River area was ideal for mills because of the large amount of clean water available to power the millstone. Mills played a critical role in Chester's economy both before and during Chester's "Iron Age."
