Remnants of the Zabriskie Dam

Dublin Core

Title

Remnants of the Zabriskie Dam

Description

This is a picture of the remains of the Zabriskie Dam. The dam allowed local industrial factories to harness power from the running river and it also created Sylvan Lake, a tourist attraction. John Zabriskie used brownstone to create a 50 foot high dam. The dam eventually burst in 1882. A large portion of the dam remained until 1948 when the town started to recycle the stones. The townspeople complained and the what remains of the dam has stayed intact since.
