Dublin Core

Title

Oakland's Last Blacksmith: Photo of Henry R. Hopper and Photo with Tools

Description

Here is a picture of Henry R. Hopper: Oakland’s last blacksmith, and a picture of his tools with a smaller picture of himself in the center of the piece of wood that holds the tools. His father and two older brothers were also blacksmiths, so Hopper joined the family business until he had to close-up shop in 1916. When he did that the business of blacksmithing, for all intense and purpose, was done in Oakland. Hopper then went to Haskell, New Jersey to work at the DuPoint Company there, and stayed there until about December 28, 1918, a month after the World War 1 armistice was signed. He had other jobs in Oakland like Tax Collector and was the President of the Oakland Fire Department, as well as one of its founding members.
Like the Jno Mandigo picture, Hopper used similar tools like a Linch pin, Short Chisel, etc, which can be viewed here.
