Dublin Core

Title

Jno Mandigo and His Blacksmith Tools

Description

This picture shows the tools and the house that once belonged to Jno Mandigo, a blacksmith and farmer who lived in Oakland from 1822 to 1894. His home was at 266 Ramapo Valley Road. Jno was one of four blacksmiths who had a shop on Ramapo Valley Road. At that time they were the local handymen who would fix just about anything in town, from metal tools to wagon wheels. Mandigo Drive in Oakland is named after him.
Here are some of the tools he would have used in his line of work. Some of these tools were made from discarded material like the clevis was made from a discarded wagon wheel tire. Other tools included in this collection are a staple, linch pin, baling hook, etc.

266 Ramapo Valley R'd, House of Jno Mandigo 1840 Era
These hand forged items are from the estate of Jno Mandigo. He was a blacksmith, farmer and Mandigo Drive is named in his honor. As one of four blacksmiths along Ramapo Valley Road, (as shown on the C. C. Pease 1776-1876 Atlas of Bergen County). He and his kind were the forefunners of our present huge metal fabrication industry. In their period of time, and beside shoeing horses, they were the local repair man and manufactures of misc. hardware, as depicted by these items.
Henry R. Hopper was the last in town, temporally closing in 1916, never to open again on a full time basis. These item were donated to the Oakland Historical Society in may 1983 by Stan Noury of Noury Oakland Motors, 260 Ramapo Valley Road, once a part of the Mandigo Farm.
(By Al John V.P. and House Chairman, O.H.S.).
