January 12th, 1931

Dear Henrietta,

The weather made it seem like a long time since I left you.  Maybe I now regret that I left you so early last evening, but I had a hard time getting up this morning as it was.  Whether or not the weather is at fault I feel like I would like to come home and find you there.  You have company at present resulting in thoughts of me only infrequently.

It is mornings and days like this one which prove that you made a wise choice in staying in Palisades during the winter months.  Can you imagine trying to hurry to work through the blinding snow of this morning.  It took me one half hour longer than it usually does to come over this morning.  If you had the ride both ways besides teaching i would be a serious tax on your nervous resources.

I have busy all day up to the last half hour. (It is five o'clock).  Just routine work.  At three thirty I dashed down to the news dealer’s to get the Newark Evening News and scanned the sheets for the notice of the results.  They weren't there.  I have no explanation except the one I gave you, and I hate to think that is the correct one.  If you would buy the News every evening after you came from school you will be able to learn of my success or failure as soon as I.  Perhaps it would be better to save it for me to spring it on you as a surprise.  I would like time in order to cover up my disappointment.  You once told me that you would give me my leave if I flunked but I did not take that literally.  Should I?

I had planned to go to Pompton this evening and visit Frank Jr. I imagine that he will be covering a council meeting at Butler in which John Borouth is involved.  I have told you about John, the court clerk.  But the roads look in such a sloppy condition that I think I would be foolish.  There will be plenty of nice evenings when I could go, why pick on an evening like this.

If I can possibly do it I will be over to see you on Wednesday evening.  I cannot see the advisability or riding there in my open buggy on a cold night.  I think it would be quite nice to surprise you.  If I tell you that I am coming I only get discredit if I don't, whereas if I say that I won't I get credit for coming.  More satisfaction for both provided it works.

                                                                                     Love

                                                                                      Frank (signed)
