1870s
Description
An account of the resource
Here we have an idea of what women wore in the mid-late 1800s to go swimming. We can see here that women’s swimwear at this time looked more like dresses or gowns more than something you would wear in the water. These women are dressed head-to-toe showing very little skin. This outfit showcases the long extravagant dress and the trousers they wore underneath the dress. They also have swimming shoes and even hats. The hats are very small and seem to serve no purpose except as a decoration piece. In the background we see what appear to be houses but may be what they called Bathing machines.

A name given to the resource
1890s bathing suits
Date
A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource
1800s
Description
An account of the resource
At the end of the 1800s we begin to see more time being spent at the beach by the everyday person. This meant more time for men and women to be exposed to each other in their bathing suits outside of their bathing machines. So we see that the dresses are still very modest but slightly less elegant. This dress here seems to serve the purpose of covering up the body but now they are less about the “look” and more about making sure the women are not exposed. We do see a bit more skin than the rest of the 1800s swimwear but they still have the dress and pants underneath. They ditched the shoes and fancy hats and now are barefoot. The hats seem a bit more practical in this photo. They have a much rounder and extended brim, which can now shelter the eyes from the sun, similar to sun hats that women wear to the beach now.

Title
A name given to the resource
1930s Casual Couple
Date
A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource
Abt. 1930s
Description
An account of the resource
In this photo we see a couple who seem casual and very comfortable getting their picture taken a field by a fence. They have their arms around each other and are smiling, we can assume that they are a couple. There are trees and house in the background. This scenery suggests that they are in a rural area and not a main city. The photo is black and white.
The man is wearing a dress shirt with short sleeves, a long tie, and dress pants. This outfit is very similar to casual business attire worn by men throughout the 1900s even into current fashion. The woman is wearing a long dress with buttons going up the front and a v-shaped collar. Her hair is pulled back while his hair is bushy and curly.

Title
A name given to the resource
1930s Woman in Dress
Date
A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource
1920-1930
Description
An account of the resource
In the photo we see a woman, in her mid-20s, photographed outdoors. She is wearing a sun hat and a short-sleeved dress that goes all the way down to her mid-calf, known as a “drop-waist shirt dress”. These dresses were very popular in the late 1920s. The dress features vertical stripes and a cloth band that wraps around her body and sits slightly under her waist. This style of day dress was characterized by its “boxy” look, which was caused by the dropped waist, and also by the folded collar. The collars look similar to modern day dress shirts, except much longer and exaggerated. The collar she has on is a deep V-neck cut but is still conservative and shows no cleavage. This look was popular until the mid 1930s when the new trend was to show a thin waist to give the woman a more hour-glass figure as opposed to this square type of figure that these shirt dresses gave women.

This is a picture of the arch, before the school buildings were built. It is located in the college's grove and is the classical style red stone arch with brick support. It was moved to this location from the courtyard of Theodore Havemeyer, who lived on Madison Avenue around 1916. Stephen Birch later owned the Mahwah property. It is an important landmark for Ramapo College and is the symbol of the school. There are ceremonies and events that are done where the arch is the main focus. Every year the school has a Founder’s Day that is located by the arch. There is the Arching Ceremony when people who are knew to the campus go through the arch form the Bradley Center and shake the current President of the college hand. The Arching Ceremony also happens in reverse when commencement happens. This time students come from the main building through the arch to the Bradley Center. In the fall the student involvement fair happens by the arch. If people are looking for a job the school has a site called the archway that can help a person find a job. It was moved to this location from the courtyard of Theodore Havemeyer, who lived on Madison Avenue in New York City around 1916. The arch is a big deal for the school, it is their logo. If a person gets from the school it will have an arch on it. If a person buys a shirt or other objects from the bookstore it will also have an arch on it.

Description
An account of the resource
In this photo we see multiple bathing machines being placed in the shallow water of a beach. Bathing machines were wooden carts that were used to allow people, particular women, to swim and spend time in the water in complete privacy. People would enter the bathing machines while they were still on the beach and change from their street clothes and put on their bathing suits.
