The Project

The final plan of the project was to use the censuses to track the presence and demographics of the Ramapough Indians in Mahwah. To do that, I went through and deleted anyone not connected with the Ramapough and then used Google Fusion tables to look at some of the more interesting aspects of the census. I focused in particular on the racial aspect of the table as well as the popularity of certain surnames over others. While I would be interested in doing more work on this in the future, this project is not meant to be a comprehensive look at either Mahwah’s history or that of the Ramapough people. Instead, it is meant to build a record of some of the Ramapough families in Mahwah and some demographic information about them, primarily from 1860-1940.
